Manchester Metrolink trams halted in city centre for revamp [BBC News]

Work has started on the Metrolink in Manchester, suspending all tram services across the city centre for eight weeks. Trams will not run through St Peter's Square until the end of August, Transport for Greater Manchester said. It is part of a 14-month construction project to create a new tram crossing in the city, expected to open in 2017. [From Mark Bartlett]
