In the shadow of the old Battersea Power station a crane lowers the first of two huge drilling machines named Helen and Amy - to begin tunnelling on what will be the £1.2 billion Northern line extension. The tunnels will extend the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line from Kennington to Battersea Power station via Nine Elms - bringing the Tube network to a huge area of south London currently devoid of Underground services.
