Fire crews battle large wildfire in Lochaber [Press and Journal]

Firefighters have spent nearly six hours battling a large wildfire on the Ardnamurchan peninsula. The fire, which at its peak measured 500 acres (0.8 sq miles) in size, started at Dalnabreac near Acharacle, shortly before 12.30pm. A total of four appliances one each from Acharacle, Strontian, Kilchoan and Fort William attended and about 25 firefighters used main jets to extinguish the flames. A fire service spokeswoman said that three more fire crews one each from Mallaig, Fort William and Spean Bridge also spent several hours tackling a much smaller wildfire near Arisaig, close to Beasdale station, which started just minutes later. The fire service spokeswoman said that this fire measured about 25 acres in size.

Firefighters spent nearly six hours yesterday (Wed) battling a large wildfire on the Ardnamurchan peninsula.

As our Sprinter climbed west on Beasdale Bank there was a distinct hush - our train slowed - the lineside on both sides of the line was burned and a Stygian Gloom had descended. The same on our return journey although only a small area of the fire remained burning.
