Simon Clarke, MP for Middlesbrough South and east Cleveland and Ben Houchen, Tees Valley Mayor, are calling on TransPennine Express to extend their Manchester Airport to Middlesbrough service so that it starts and finishes in Saltburn. Mr Houchen is scheduled to meet with bosses at TransPennine later this month, whilst Mr Clarke met with Keith Simpson, the chairman of the Saltburn Line User Group (SLUG) last week. The pair discussed the proposal, which would bring an hourly service to Saltburn station to complement the existing Northern trains.

Once described as a Victorian seaside gem, the Stockton & Darlington terminus at Saltburn (originally Saltburn-by-Sea) is seen with a train waiting to leave for Darlington in the 1970s. On the left a line once ran through the station to a private excursion platform built to serve the Zetland Hotel, arguably the towns finest building. The photograph was taken during a run-down period in Saltburn's history, since when significant developments and improvements have taken place, including preservation of both the 1861 station entrance (which now gives access to a shopping precinct) and the Zetland Hotel (which has been turned into luxury flats).
