Train manufacturer Hitachi has expanded its County Durham facility following the opening of a new building representing a £5m investment. The new building named Aspire following a staff competition has been constructed to boost production capacity and now means Hitachis total investment in the Newton Aycliffe site reaches over £100m. The opening of the Newton Aycliffe site brought train manufacturing back to the region in a modern facility to build intercity and commuter fleets, all harnessing Japanese bullet train technology. Its first order was the Government-led £5.7bn Intercity Express Programme which includes the Azuma fleet for the East Coast main line.
