Fatal train may have hit 50mph on bend [Sunday Times]

Date: 16/08/2020

The train that derailed in Aberdeenshire on Wednesday, killing three people, may have been travelling at up to 50mph on a bend when it struck a landslip, it has emerged. However, there is no suggestion that the driver was exceeding the areas speed limit, which was 65mph. Nor is there any suggestion he breached safety rules. Informed sources say he would have been in close contact with Network Rail and ScotRail control room staff. [Railscot note - Network Rail's sectional appendix shows that for HSTs the limit is 75mph between 219 miles 39 chains (Carmont Level Crossing) and 224 miles 23 chains. For other trains the limit is 65mph.]
