Quarter-million-pound boost for improvements to Deeside Way [Nestrans]

Date: 21/09/2020

Nestrans has been successful in applying for funding which will allow substantial improvements to be made to one of the region^s favourite walking and cycling routes. £250,000 of support from Sustrans Scotland will fund work that will increase the width of the path along The Deeside Way, supporting safe physical distancing for those using the route. The shared-use path, which is part of National Cycle Network Route 195, connects several communities along its 41 mile length, and serves as a popular active travel route for locals and visitors alike.

View east along the Deeside Way towards Aberdeen at Murtle on a beautiful autumn day in November 2012. Opened in 1853, Murtle station was reduced to a Halt in 1930, before closing in April 1937. The old timber station building has had limited alteration. The granite Station Master's ('Agent' in GNoSR terms) house is in good repair and is sited just north of the station.

Cults Station building dating from 1894 replaced the original structure from 1853 (which had been moved by train from the original location a few hundred yards east in 1855). It has the typical piended (hipped) roof of stations on the Deeside Line. The Up platform is heavily overgrown but intact whereas currently there is no obvious sign of the Down platform; in fact it is hidden behind a row of trees. The building is extended for light industrial use and lies close to the North Deeside Road and is easily accessible on foot off Station Road (private parking only). The walk/cycle/bridleway is part of the Deeside Way route from Duthie Park, Aberdeen to Ballater. In the early 20th Century not only did Cults have two stations but also on-street trams. A photo of these latter is displayed in the toilets of the nearby Cults Hotel.
