23rd April 2020 marked the end of the main line career of 60009 'Union of South Africa'. However, the A4 will spend some time on preserved railways before its full retirement. John Cameron (on the left) is photographed at Aberdeen in front of his loco, about to return to Edinburgh with 'The Bon Accord' on 13th April 1974. Thanks for the memories ...

John Cameron's A4 pacific No.60009 'Union of South Africa' has been on a day out from Riley & Sons workshop. It made a run from Castleton to Carnforth in the early hours of 4th February 2020 before going on a loaded test run around the Carnforth loop (via Hellifield, Blackburn & Preston). Running around 90 minutes ahead of schedule the train is seen passing Lostock Hall. Hopefully all went well with the run and the loco will be seen for a few more months on the mainline.
