Community Rail Cumbria celebrates 175 years of railway [Community Rail Network]

Community Rail Cumbria, station volunteer groups and partners unite to celebrate the opening of Cumbria's railways 175 years ago. Project 175 is a year-long celebration of Cumbrias railway (Furness Line and Lakes Line) with activities including community events, exhibitions, artwork, plaques, and planting at stations in the region.

A Derby Class 108 2-car DMU calls at Kendal in 1981. By this time the Windermere branch has been singled although the old Up Platform was still in place. The station is still open but the awning seen here has now been removed.

Britannia 70016 'Ariel' setting off from Oxenholme for Carlisle on 1st July 1967, with a full head of steam for the gradients ahead. The train was not heavy, however, as it was the 11.55 Saturdays only Euston – Carlisle, from which the portion for Windermere had just been detached. Alongside the train is the direct link from the Windermere branch onto the mainline at Kendal Junction. This has since been removed and the station platform extended into this space. Trains now access the branch via the line on the left of this picture.

Climbing to make its Oxenholme connection with the WCML, which follows the line of trees below the left skyline, 185103 leaves Kendal. The former station building on the right has been converted into apartments and passenger accommodation is now a small modern shelter behind the camera. See image [[70403]] for the same view in 1981.
