Looking across the weed-infested former southbound platform towards the northbound at Ashington station on the Blyth & Tyne line in Northumberland, that closed to passengers in 1964 but is still open for freight, on 15th June 2018. Ashington is a major town that should never have lost its rail service and campaigns to reopen have been going on for years. Then, on 23rd January 2021, an announcement was made that £34 million has now been granted towards reopening with a possibility this will take place in 2025. We shall see.
