Preston's Old Tram Bridge to be replaced and city parks revamped in £20m boost [Lancashire Post]

Date: 18/01/2023

Preston's historic Old Tram Bridge will finally be replaced after the city scooped £20m from the governments Levelling Up Fund. As the most eye-catching of the plans, the replacement bridge - estimated in 2021 to cost around £6m will enable the restoration of a connection between Avenham Park and Penwortham that was abruptly cut over safety fears almost four years ago. A near 3,000-signature petition last year pushed for the bridge to be included in Prestons levelling up bid.

What is known as the Old Tram Bridge in Preston is in fact a 1965 built replica of the original timber trestle bridge that it replaced. Immediately beyond the bridge lies the old rope worked inclined plane, now a steep driveway through Avenham Park. When the horse drawn tramway was closed around 1864 the timber bridge was gifted to Preston Corporation and used as a footbridge to cross the River Ribble for over 100 years before becoming delapidated. The replica was then constructed in concrete and steel to replace it but it has also become unsafe and is presently (2020) closed off. The old tramroad can be followed south from here for around a mile towards Bamber Bridge See image [[28468]].
