An NBL diesel shunter and brake van at Scotland Street coal depot in mid-1966, a year before closure. The impressive mass of the New Town's Scotland Street dominates the view to the rear, while immediately to the left of the brake van is the bricked-up tunnel which led up the hill to Canal Street station (adjacent, and at right angles to, Waverley). This cable haulage route opened in 1847, and from 1850 to 1868 (when the better graded route via Abbeyhill and Leith Walk stations opened) carried passengers bound for the World's first train ferry, from Granton to Burntisland.
