Ayrshire - When a train trip from Largs to Glasgow only cost 10p [Largs and Millport News]

Date: 23/02/2023

Largs' first ever train trip to place 138 years ago - and it only cost 10p for a trip to Glasgow! On May 1885, the first passenger train steamed into the new station with about a dozen directors of the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company on board. After waiting for a short time to inspect the buildings of the platforms and the wooden station the train steamed out again in a fusillade of fog signals. Twelve days later on Monday June 1 the extension to Largs of the Ardrossan and Fairlie branch was opened to traffic.

Editor's footnote: Additional info from Colin Miller points out on the far right The Old Engine, a stationary boiler that was probably from an old 0-6-0 and mounted on a brick base with timber hut attached for the fireman. It is actually steaming in this picture, supplying heat for the rake of coaches. Its predecessor was a G&SW 4-6-4T. Any photos of the Largs stationary boilers would be welcomed for Railscot publication.
