Campaign to reinstate Dumfries to Stranraer railway line relaunched for 60th anniversary of Beeching Report [Daily Record]

Campaigners believe reopening the line is more beneficial than plans to duel a major arterial road through the region and be better for the environment.

The pleasant appearance of the station belies the fact that it was about to be part of the much-lamented closure of the 'Port Road' only nine days later. The picture is one of a series taken by the photographer during a journey along the railway in June 1965. Railway enthusiasm inevitably colours one's view of these things but, looking at the lovely stations and signal boxes along the route, one feels that the closure of this important line was surely an act of vandalism.
