A consortium of contractors responsible for the repair and maintenance of the Historical Railways Estate (HRE) has 'risen' to the challenge, according to National Highways.
Contractors Amco Giffen, Balfour Beatty, Beaver Bridges, Bethell, Dyer & Butler and ECS have been conducting a maintenance and repair programme of 265 works over the last financial year, April 2022-March 2023.
The HRE is a collection of more than 3,100 structures, many built over 100 years ago, which were once part of the UKs rail network. This September, National Highways will celebrate 10 years of being responsible for the HRE on behalf of the Department for Transport (DfT).
National Highways spent £9M on the 256 schemes over the financial year. Of thes 256, 179 were in England, 62 in Scotland and 24 in Wales.
