Hard to believe this is the same viewpoint as the shot taken 41 years ago see image [[29053]]. A 'Friends of the Far North Line' outing is about to escape the Altnabreac midges by jumping on the 13.55 departure for Thurso and Wick on 26th August 2015. In the left foreground is former Invergordon signalman Iain Macdonald (50 years’ service on the railway), on the far right is Mike Lunan (formerly Chair of the Rail Passengers Committee Scotland), while the man in the red anorak is leading Highland rail activist Richard Ardern.

Hunters, shooters and fishers offload gear from an Inverness-Wick train at Altnabreac in the summer of 1971, doubtless heading for the up-market Lochdhu Hotel a mile across the moor. The photographer camped overnight at this isolated station, and in the evening wandered over the then treeless expanse (like something out of Dr Zhivago) to the hotel, to find himself in a cocktail bar full of elaborately attired ladies and gentlemen...
