A new operator will take over the London to Scotland East Coast Main Line from this weekend. From Sunday the service, operated by GNER since 1996, will be replaced by National Express East Coast. The route was put out to tender last year, after GNER's parent firm said it could not pay £1.3bn it promised the government to run the service. The new operator has promised to improve punctuality and spend £24m on new rolling stock.
