During the last month of BR steam working, Black 5 no 45110 of Lostock Hall shed (now preserved on the Severn Valley Railway) stands in the Courtaulds sidings near Ribbleton waiting to return to Preston. The locomotive had brought in a trainload of coal to the factory which, at that time, with its cooling towers, was a landmark alongside the M6 motorway near Preston, but has since been demolished.

Courtaulds' resident Peckett (2087/1948) shunter, apparently known as Miranda, stands in the factory sidings on a cold day in 1968, the year in which it was replaced by a diesel shunter. This view looks back towards the BR exchange sidings on the Preston to Longridge branch, which ran at right angles to these lines.

Before Grimsargh's station [See image 24597] was built tickets for trains were sold from the Plough Inn, which stood by the level crossing. The footpath seen here follows the line of the old railway towards Longridge and, while the main station was behind the camera, the bungalows have been built over the platform that was used by the Whittingham Hospital trains.
