BLACKPOOL’S famous trams were back in service today as the new tourist season got into full swing for Easter. And the return of the much-loved fleet after five months away was heralded as a major step forward in the battle to complete the town’s regeneration. [From Mark Bartlett]

New platforms are appearing all along the Blackpool and Fleetwood Tramway, including these at Lowther Avenue on the Bispham cliffs. They are part of the wholesale system refurbishment and will provide level access into the trams. Tramcar 711 heads south past the illumination displays as it leaves the original tramstop and runs through the as yet unopened platforms.

Boat Car No. 600, painstakingly restored for the Blackpool Tramway 125 celebrations, makes a fine sight as it leaves the stop at Lowther Avenue and heads along the cliffs to Bispham. Seven of these stylish open cars were built in 1934 to replace early open toastrack trams and must have been a real contrast to their predecessors. Three of them are still in regular service as part of Blackpool's heritage fleet.
