Dalry Road Shed: Royal Scot no 46107 Argyll and Sutherland Highlander drifts away from the coaling stage at Dalry Road shed on 24 March 1962. Note the ex-Caledonian semaphore route indicator above the buffer beam. The edge of Dalry Road station's island platform can be seen at the bottom of the picture.
Dalry Road Shed: With the platforms of Dalry Road station in the background, Kingmoor's Britannia Pacific no 70023 Venus moves off Dalry Road shed and reverses towards Princes Street to take over a train on 24th March 1962. Also in evidence on shed are a Caley 3F, a Standard Class 2 and a Black 5. Nowadays this view is completely dominated by the West Approach Road - although the (Edinburgh-bound) platform edge at Dalry Road station has miraculously survived. See image [[29250]]

Polmadie Shed: An assortment of steam and diesel on shed at Polmadie on the afternoon of 24 March 1967, including two Stanier Black 5s standing ready for their next tours of duty. Locomotive 45013, nearest the camera, subsequently took the 15.57 service to Gourock out of Central station.
St Boswells: Photograph taken from the guard's van at the rear of a type 2 hauled freight after leaving St Boswells for Hawick on a misty morning on 24 March 1969. The trip took place during the period when the Waverley route was operating 'freight only' as far south as Hawick.
Noblehill Junction: The up Royal Train 1X00 passing Dumfries south signal box in March 1972, hauled by a pair of immaculate looking type 2 diesel locomotives.
Dumfries: Brush type 4 no 1950 with a diverted Glasgow - Liverpool train, photographed south of Dumfries station in March 1972. The train has just cleared the Annan Road bridge and is about to pass D3172 of Kingmoor MPD shunting the south sidings.
Dumfries: A short, sharp shower of rain sweeps across Dumfries during the morning of 24 March 1972. With electrification work in full swing on the WCML, locomotives 409+433 bring train 1M20, the diverted up Royal Scot, south through the station.
Aviemore: 40015 with a freight at Aviemore in March 1979 heading for Inverness.
Horbury and Ossett: 08659 and a brakevan head east into Horbury cutting in March 1983. This was probably trip working 9K47 from Healey Mills Yard (see lighting towers in background) to collect wagons from Wakefield Wagon Repair Depot. 08659 continued in service for another eight years before withdrawal from Healey Mills in 1991 and was cut up in Margam four years later. This stretch of line was reduced from four tracks to two in 1991.
British Oak Opencast Loading Site: Some record books show Class 11 No. 12122 as being cut up at Crigglestone near Wakefield in 1975 but here it is in 1983, albeit out of use, sitting behind 08016 and 03037 in the loco sidings at the British Oak Disposal Point.
British Oak Opencast Loading Site: D3023/08016 has been controversially used on the Bluebell Railway works trains until recently. Here it is in 1983 in an earlier role, sold out of BR service and working at the British Oak Disposal Point, Crigglestone, near Wakefield. Alongside is 03037, also now preserved.
Edinburgh Waverley: Notice displayed at Waverley on 24 March 1986, on the reopening of the Bathgate branch.
Bathgate [4th]: A promotion-rate ticket for the (re)opening day of Edinburgh to Bathgate services in March 1986. A representative of a fantastic new Class called a Pacer was helping out that day; never seen in Scotland again as far as I know. My abiding memory is unexpectedly non-stopping Uphall and hearing the Doppler effect when passing a surprised piper at speed.
Tickets and labels: Commemorative ticket issued on the reopening of the Edinburgh - Bathgate line on 24 March 1986.
Livingston North: 101 364 with a Bathgate train at Livingston North on 24 March 1986, first day of the new service.

Pencaitland: Photograph taken alongside the trackbed at Pencaitland in March 2007. The line from Ormiston came in from the left, with the route onward towards the branch terminus at Gifford to the right. View is north towards the A6093, with the area beyond the surviving gradient sign now a car park forming part of the Pencaitland Railway Walk. Immediately to the left stood Pencaitland station itself, closed to passengers as long ago as 1933 and since replaced by the silos of the Pencaitland Maltings (see image [[14101]]).
Edinburgh Waverley: 'Pass the ballast...' Waverley west end, 24 March 2007.

Bridge of Earn: Diverted NXEC HST 1E12 passing south through the site of Bridge of Earn station on 24 March during engineering works at Larbert.
Maudland Bridge: A view east under the bridge that carried Maudland Bank road over the railway. Under the left hand part was the chord line of 1850-1885 that connected the Longridge branch via a flat crossing over the Lancaster line direct to the Fleetwood/Blackpool line. Under the right hand bridge was the Preston to Longridge curve of 1885 and which survived until the late 1980s, latterly to serve the Deepdale coal concentration depot. The central bridge, and bridge to the left, from 1885 to ~1980 crossed the rebuilt Maudland goods yard lines.

Pickering: A quiet period at Pickering on 24 March 2010 sees the platforms occupied by ex-BR class 04 no D2207 and DSRM no 1 'Ron Rothwell' shunting empty stock.
Pickering Railway Gas Works: The former railway gas works retort and purifier house just south of Pickering station. Built by the York & North Midland Railway in the 1840s, it supplied gas to the station and part of Pickering itself before construction of the town's own gas works. After decommissioning the building was used for a time as a grain warehouse. The still impressive structure is seen here in March 2010 in use as a hairdressing salon. [Editorial ref: 'Oh Mrs Ware, I do like your hair, who does it? I go to Madame Pom-Pom round by the gas works... ' (Cribbins 1962)]
Edinburgh Waverley: TransPennine 185 112 nearly ready to depart Platform 10 at Waverley on 24 March. Its journey to Manchester Airport will not conspicuously involve crossing the Pennines, though it will have a fair stab at the less celebrated Southern Uplands.
Pickering: D5061 stands at the buffer stops at the south end of Pickering station on 24 March 2010 having just come off a NYMR train from Grosmont.
Earn Viaduct [Forgandenny]: An Aberdeen - Glasgow Queen Street service heads south over the recently restored Earn Crossing on 24 March 2011.
Stockport: The view from Platform 0. EMU 323235 calls at Platform 1 on its way to Crewe with an all stations stopper. Platform 0 was built in 2004 to ease pressure on the original two island platforms but only used from 2008.

Chicago LaSalle Street: View south-east from the 103rd floor of Chicago's Willis Tower on 24 March showing the throat of LaSalle Street Station, bottom right. Also in the photograph is the former Dearborn Station (the red brick clock tower and green roof) in the centre left of the photograph. Dearborn closed in 1971 and the area once occupied by the platforms and approach tracks is now occupied by Dearborn Park and low-rise housing.
Stockport: In 1840 Stockport viaduct was the largest viaduct in the world and is still one of the world's largest brick built structures. In the 1890s it was widened for four tracks. A Class 323 EMU is on the up slow lines passing over the River Mersey and Stockport bus station on the approach to Stockport station.
Stockport: Adelante 180108 gets the right away from Platform 0 at Stockport with a Northern service from Preston to Hazel Grove. Because the sharp curve through this new platform restricts visibility a Banner Repeater precedes the actual colour light signal.
Neidpath Viaduct: Neidpath Viaduct seen from the east on 24 March 2011, showing the construction of the skew arches.
Chicago Elevated Railway: A Chicago L train heads east between LaSalle and Library stations on The Loop in March 2011.
Chicago and North Western Terminal: View northwest from the Willis Tower showing what is now the Ogilvie Transportation Center, which replaced the former Chicago & North Western Railroad's Chicago and North Western Terminal, built in 1911. The new station was opened in 1987 and renamed the Ogilvie Transportation Center 10 years later. It is used by the Metra commuter rail system's Union Pacific West, North and Northwest routes. The tracks further to the right adjacent to the Chicago River are the tracks leading north from Union Station in the direction of Milwaukee and are used by Amtrak and Metra's Milwaukee District North and West and North Central Service routes.
Bathgate: Alistair Findlay is congratulated by Councillor John McGinty following the unveiling at Bathgate station on 24 March 2011.
Stockport: The Stagecoach liveried EMT trains bring a splash of different colour to the Manchester area as they pass through on Norwich - Liverpool services. 158871 runs in to Platform 0 at Stockport (Edgeley) on 24 March, passing the LNWR signal box, and will take the Hazel Grove line to access the Hope Valley route.
Llanwrtyd: Two Central Wales line services cross at Llanwrtyd and also exchange their crews. 153320 is heading from Shrewsbury to Swansea while 153367 on the left is making the northbound trip. The station actually serves Llanwrtyd Wells, the Smallest town in Wales, and the platform signs also displayed this, but the official name is the plain one.
Swindon: Preserved Stanier Pacific no 6201 Princess Elizabeth photographed at Swindon with a special on 24 March 2012.
Shrewsbury: The striking London Midland livery of a 153/170 combination in Shrewsbury's bay platform contrasts with the Arriva Trains Wales blue of 175103. The LM units had arrived from Birmingham via Telford on 24 April and behind them was the 153 that had worked in from Swansea via the Central Wales line.
Shrewsbury: Taking the Hereford line over the diamond crossing in front of Shrewsbury's famous signalbox on 24 March 2012 is ATW unit 175009. There is still (for now) much to see at Shrewsbury station, including the unusual bracket lower quadrant semaphores on the left, with the lenses part way along the arms.
Llanelli: The 0730hrs Saturday service from Pembroke Dock to Swansea, formed by ATW Sprinter 150281, calls at Llanelli. Much of this station's old infrastructure survives including the large awnings and footbridge seen here.
Forth Bridge: The Forth Bridge seen from Dalgety Bay - March 2012.
Carmarthen: Early morning scene at Carmarthen station on 24 March showing Sprinter Bubble Car 153362 that had stabled overnight in the bay platform. In the foreground is the old line to Aberystwyth and Cardigan which now terminates under the bridge from which the picture was taken. Carmarthen opened in 1902, replacing an earlier station just to the north of here see image [[38198]] and enjoys a regular service of trains including a daily HST service to Paddington.
Carmarthen Old: The old station at Carmarthen closed in 1902 but lived on as a goods depot for many years and still stands in March 2012 alongside a car park built on the old trackbed. It lies just north of the replacement Carmarthen station See image [[38182]] on the old line to Cardigan and Aberystwyth but separated by the River Towy. Goods trains continued to pass through here until as late as 1973 when the Newcastle Emlyn branch finally closed. [With thanks to Kenneth Leiper]
Llanwrtyd: Looking back up the gradient towards Sugar Loaf from Llanwrtyd station where two single car units are crossing. They will also exchange train crews here before departures for Shrewsbury and Swansea.
Puy de Dome: Part of the yet-to-open Puy de Dome Tramway near Clermont Ferrand, photographed in March 2012. At 1460m, Put de Dome is the highest of the Auvergne volcanoes. The electric rack-and-pinion Tramway is due to open later this year. Note the sleepers.
Llanelli: There are busy level crossings at both ends of Llanelli's platforms, controlled by a signalbox at the Swansea end. This view looks west on 24 March as 175112 waits to depart and 175011 runs in on the 0730hrs Pembroke Dock to Manchester Piccadilly service.
Llanelli: A Central Wales Line service for Shrewsbury, formed by ATW 153367, calls at Llanelli in March 2012. Although this is normally the westbound platform, all Central Wales services use it to reverse before leaving for Swansea or Shrewsbury via a crossover just beyond the station.
Portobello: 70013 at Portobello on 24 March preparing to work 'The Auld Reekie' charter back to Manchester.
Shrewsbury: A member of staff waiting for a second Arriva 158 unit to couple on to 158833 makes for an unusual sight amid Shrewsbury's architecture. The combined train left shortly afterwards for Aberystwith while 175103 on the right was on a service to Holyhead.
Llandovery: A Cardiff to Shrewsbury (Heart of Wales line) service pauses in the passing loop at Llandovery station while the driver exchanges single line tokens. ATW single unit 153367 stands opposite the refurbished station building, formally re-opened by the Prince of Wales in June 2011 after many years of disuse. The crew will continue to Llanwrtyd where they will swap trains with a Shrewsbury crew and return south.
Joppa [2nd]: 'Isn't that Oliver Spaven...?' 'Looks more like David Cromwell to me....' 70013 photographed at Joppa on 24 March preparing to work 'The Auld Reekie' charter back to Manchester Victoria (...with 'you know who' on the footplate - again!) See image [[38020]]
Swindon: Ex-LMS 6201 'Princess Elizabeth' about to run through Swindon with a special on 24 March 2012.
Kingsknowe: Britannia Pacific 70013 Oliver Cromwell approaching Kingsknowe at speed on 24 March 2012 with 'The Auld Reekie' charter.
Carmarthen: A Then and Now comparison with the 1971 view of the bridge over the River Towy in Carmarthen see image [[36249]]. The old railway bridge and its pillars have gone although the abutment on the far bank can just be seen, as can the remains of the first Carmarthen station, which lingered on for goods traffic into the early 1970s. The approach road for the surviving station is just behind the camera.
Cameron Toll Signal Box: 'The Auld Reekie' charter, hauled by Britannia Pacific no 70013 Oliver Cromwell westbound on the Edinburgh 'sub' on 24 March 2012 on its way back to Manchester Victoria. The train is seen here crossing Lady Road at Cameron Toll on Edinburgh's southside.
Crewe (Gresty Bridge Depot): Direct Rail Services' Gresty Bridge Depot, as seen from a Shrewsbury to Crewe train on 24 March 2012. The picture shows newly painted EE Type 3 No. 37259, which had just been reinstated after a period in store, along with DRS Class 66 No. 66431, a Northern Belle liveried Class 47 and a Class 20. The train was held here at a signal for some time and the conductor announced that the delay was due to 'trains going in and out of Crewe station', which was probably all we passengers needed to know.
Portobello Junction: Back to the future....? 70013 'Oliver Cromwell' takes the Borders Railway at Portobello East Junction with an excursion from Manchester Victoria to Tweedbank on 24 March ..(?)2015.... (Meantime settle for another shot of 70013 with The Auld Reekie in 2012.)
Portobello: Still firing after all these years. Captured in the cab of Oliver Cromwell at Portobello on 24th March 2012, Danny Forbes' railway career has taken him from Keith in 1958 via Kyle, Hawick (1962-64), Cambridge, and Stratford (East London) to Aberdeen. He is now part of West Coast Railways' footplate team. The photographer discovered that their paths had almost certainly crossed in 1978-79 when Danny was driving Class 47-hauled Freightliner trains from Stratford and the photographer was a terminal supervisor at Stratford FLT. See image [[38248]]
Portobello: Danny Forbes in action firing Oliver Cromwell on 24 March 2012 see image [[38225]].
Kingsknowe: 47580 County of Essex (owned by the Stratford 47 Group) draws away from Kingsknowe Station after being held at the level crossing while following 'The Auld Reekie' charter to Manchester on 24 March.
Adderley Park: The gentleman on the right seems to be quite keen to be somewhere warmer, but the 14.35 to Birmingham New Street will only give him 6 minutes of defrosting time. A factory at the top of the cutting, just out of view to the right, was once the final assembly point for that great British institution, the half-timbered Morris Minor estate.
Duddeston: The remains of the old carriage shed at Duddeston, looking north west from the station in March 2013. The central roof section is no more - rumoured to have collapsed spontaneously after closure.
Duddeston: You see, you can have snow in March - and in England. The 14.07 to Redditch passes a well covered platform at Duddeston back in 2013. (See also image [[42497]].)
Duddeston: The 14.12 London Midland service to Lichfield Trent Valley (ex-Redditch) approaches the platform at Duddeston just before Easter 2013. See image [[42497 for a view in the opposite direction]]
Adderley Park: Thank goodness it's warmed up since March! A wintery view looking East at Adderley Park on 24th March, with the former Morris car factory to the right, see image [[42528]]. [With thanks to Mike Gibb, Kenneth Leiper and Tavish Roberts]
Jewellery Quarter: The colour scheme is loud, the exposed piping looks like the Pompidou Centre turned inside out; but for some strange and inexplicable reason, I actually like the stairs down to the platforms at Jewellery Quarter.
Jewellery Quarter: The 13.22 to Worcester Foregate Street adds a bit of colour to the heavy rail side of Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter station on 24th March. The arch just visible to the right of the lamppost does not appear to be a railway relic.
Adderley Park: A Pendolino (destination unknown) heading East, about to pass through Adderley Park station at speed on 24 March. Notice the icicles hanging from the road bridge.
Duddeston: A large helping of the deep and crisp and even, please. It may look like Christmas, but this is the weekend before Easter as a class 323 forms the 14.07 to Redditch. Notice the disused island platform on the left; the station building at road level; and the distinct absence of footprints in the snow.
Jewellery Quarter: It may be the Great Western, but in this case there is no 'e' in Looe. This cast iron gents' urinal - made in Scotland - is a decorative (non-functional) feature outside the modern station building in the background.
Jewellery Quarter: The light rail side of the station at Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter see image [[42485]] with the 13.26 Midland Metro tram to Wolverhampton St. Georges arriving. (there was a 15-minute interval service, being a Sunday)
Stansfield Hall Junction: Grab shot of the relaid Todmorden Chord at Stansfield Hall Junction on 24 March 2014. Taken from a Blackpool to York train passing the North Junction on the first day the Copy Pit line reopened after the four month closure to allow rebuilding in Holme Tunnel. When the chord itself reopens it will allow through trains from the East Lancashire line to Manchester again.
Shipley: The station building at Shipley sits inside but at the south end of the triangle of lines. In this view across the forecourt the Bradford-Leeds/Ilkley platforms can be seen through the gap in the wall while the single Skipton platform is behind the camera. The much newer main line platforms See image [[40729]] are directly opposite the station entrance but some distance away.
Bradford Forster Square: Concourse view over the buffers at Bradford Forster Square on 24 March, with former ScotRail unit 322482 in Platform 3 between duties and 333007 arriving in Platform 2 from Leeds.
Bradford Interchange: Northern 158s meet at Bradford Interchange on the morning of 24 March. Unit 1588755, on the right, is heading for York while 158753 is on a Calder Valley service to Manchester Victoria.
Frizinghall: Prior to closure in 1965 Frizinghall's platforms were situated opposite each other but when it reopened in 1987 they were staggered either side of the road overbridge. This view looking south from the northbound platform shows 333011 calling at the station heading towards Bradford Forster Square. Perhaps the station's main claim to fame is that its signalbox lives on at Damens loop on the KWVR.
Bradford Interchange: The 1:50 gradient out of Bradford Interchange starts before the end of the platform but units such as the Class 158s are well on top of the job. 158755, on a Blackpool to York service, has just reversed in the station and heads back up the hill as a sister unit, partially hidden by the bridge, drops down towards the platforms.
Shipley: 2x158s on a Settle and Carlisle service pull away from the last intermediate stop at Shipley and head for Leeds. This view taken from the Bradford branch platforms at the station with the SPAD indicator prominent in the foreground. The junction for Ilkley lies just beyond the train.
Shipley: A service from Ilkley takes the Bradford Forster Square line at Shipley. Alongside unit 333016 the Skipton line trails in from the right and beyond that is the connection into the yard. This facility has a resident diesel shunter and still generates regular trains of scrap metal to Cardiff.
Didcot Parkway: GWR 166208 in Didcot Station on 24 March 2016. The unit is now painted in the new GWR colours.
Ayr MPD: Wagons dumped in the trackless shed yard - 24-3-16. These are the casualties of the New Cumnock collision on 1st August 2015.
Edinburgh Waverley: The 1051 Virgin Pendolino to Euston via Birmingham boarding at Waverley platform 8 on 24 March 2016. For the old version of the 'sub' platform and canopy see [[7446]].
Didcot Parkway: The new view west from Didcot station on 24 March 2016. Gantry erection for the GWML electrification project appears to be progressing well, despite the media!
Edinburgh Waverley: The BR class 92 was built in the early 1990s to operate between Britain and France through the channel tunnel. Nowadays the locomotives are generally seen on domestic freight or Caledonian Sleeper duties, as is the case with 92044, seen here stabled at the east end of Waverley on the morning of 24 March 2017 (the NB clock shows 11.10). The locomotive is being operated by Serco at this time, although it still carries BR Railfreight 'triple grey' livery, as well as the name Couperin alongside its three Channel Tunnel rings.
Skewen: A view of Skewen from platform level looking towards Neath. The site of the original station closed in 1964 was on the other side of the bridge.
Howwood: What is this mysterious red pole at Howwood?

Edinburgh Waverley: One small step etc ... Waverley from the top of Jacob's Ladder in March 2017.
Waterloo Place: Looking west along Edinburgh's Waterloo Place towards Princes Street on 24 March 2017. The imposing building on the right is the Apex Hotel, one time headquarters of the North British Railway Company. The Calton Road entrance to Waverley Station can still be seen from the far end of the building see image [[52386]].
Edinburgh Waverley: Looking out from the east end of Waverley towards the Calton Tunnels on 24 March 2017. Stabled in the short bays are sleeper locomotives 67021 and 92044 Couperin, while approaching on the right is the 0603 CrossCountry Birmingham New Street - Glasgow Central. The latter has been routed into platform 8E beyond the south wall.
Edinburgh Waverley: ScotRail 380002, forming the 1142 to North Berwick, waiting to board at Waverley platform 19 on 24 March 2017.
Edinburgh Waverley: The 1103 service to Dunblane boarding at Waverley on 24 March at platform 9E. Alongside at platform 8E passengers are awaiting the arrival of the 0600 ex-Birmingham New Street CrossCountry service to Glasgow Central via Motherwell. This part of the station was transformed following the completion of major refurbishment work, including replacement of the old platform canopy, some three years ago. See image [[41379]]
Shotts: 158704 forming the 1018 service to Glasgow Central passes under the partly constructed replacement Station Road overbridge. The temporary bridge for pedestrians and services can be seen above the concrete abutment panels on the left of the photo. Access by kind permission of Abellio ScotRail.
Edinburgh Waverley: The Virgin Trains East Coast 0615 ex-Kings Cross ariving at Waverley on 24 March 2017. The train is routed into platform 9, alongside the south wall.

Bonnyrigg: The old platforms at Bonnyrigg, looking south on 24/03/2017. The fake totem is a nice touch; I wonder how many people think it's real and has hung around for 55 years?
