Northallerton East Junction: A TransPennine Middlesbrough - Manchester Airport 185 heading south, shortly after passing over Low Gates level crossing, Northallerton, in July 2012. The sidings to the left of the train are all that remains of the Leeds Northern goods depot that stood here, alongside the passenger station. The latter still stands, now part of a retail development which today occupies most of the former LN railway land see image [[39796]]. The train has been routed left at Northallerton East Junction in order to reach the station and the up ECML.
Thirsk: Having run through Thirsk station on the up slow line on 9 July, MPV DR 98955 is about to pass below the A61 on its way south towards York.
Northallerton Town: The Leeds Northern Railway's Northallerton Town station was closed in 1856, a mere 4 years after opening. The building is seen here looking south west across the High Street in the summer of 2012, some 156 years after closure, being used as a showroom by 'Court Homemakers'. The direct line linking Northallerton and Tees-side still runs past the rear of the old building see image [[39796]].
Thirsk: The 09.30 Kings Cross - Edinburgh speeds through Thirsk on the down fast line on 9 July 2012. The train is on the straight 'race track' section between York and Darlington. This train has a scheduled start-stop time of 28 minutes for the 45 mile leg.
Northallerton Town: What was once Northallerton Town station, opened by the Leeds Northern Railway in June 1852 and closed less than 4 years later on 1 January 1856. Low Gates level crossing and signal box on the Northallerton - Teesside line can be seen on the north side of the A167 in the background, with the town's High Street off to the right. The refurbished and extended building, seen here in July 2012, is now a kitchen showroom.

Leeming Bar: Preserved former BR Class 14 no D9516 in the sidings at Leeming on the Wensleydale Railway in July 2012. Built at Swindon in 1964, the locomotive was withdrawn from Hull Dairycoates in 1968 after three and a half years service.
Thirsk: A Manchester Airport - Middlesbrough train leaving Thirsk heading for its next stop at Northallerton on 9 July 2012. View north looking over the up platform, with the ECML fast lines running through the centre of the picture. [Ref query 5 July 2018]

Northallerton Town: Shortly after leaving Northallerton station on 9 July, the 11.35 Manchester Airport - Middlesbrough has turned north east onto the former Leeds Northern route heading for Teesside. The train is about to run over Low Gates level crossing on the busy A167, with the town's High Street off to the left. The kitchen showroom on the up side was once Northallerton Town station, opened by the Leeds Northern Railway in June 1852 and closed less than 4 years later on 1 January 1856 when a spur was opened via the ECML station.
Leeming Bar: A 1964 product of the Vulcan Foundry, initially numbered D6950, 'Transrail' liveried 37250 stands out of service alongside the signal box at the west end of Leeming Bar station on the Wensleydale Railway in the summer of 2012. The locomotive had arrived here from the Eden Valley Railway a year earlier. It has since been restored to operational status.
Leeming Bar: Entrance to the 1848 station at Leeming Bar with its unique Italianate pillared portico. The station was closed to passengers by BR in April 1954, but is now the headquarters of the Wensleydale Railway. View west over the old A1 road on 9 July 2012 with the level crossing on the right.
Leeming Bar: The sidings at Leeming on the Wensleydale Railway in July 2012, containing preserved diesel locomotive no D9516. This was one of the short-lived class 14s built at Swindon in 1964 and withdrawn after only three and a half years operational service on BR.
Blankenstein: One of Zellstoff Rosenthal's two diesel shunters shifts finished cellulose product south past Blankenstein's town hall to the DB exchange sidings on 9th July 2013. Until the Cold War the line continued six kilometres beyond Blankenstein, joining the (still-surviving) Bavarian branch line from Bad Steben to Hof at Marxgruen.
Kingsway Tram Subway: The former southern portal of the Kingsway Tram Subway that opened out onto Victoria Embankment below Waterloo Bridge, seen here on 9th July 2013. This opened for single decker trams from Southampton Row in Bloomsbury to Aldwych in 1906 and extended to Victoria Embankment in 1908 to link the tramways north and south of the Thames though not actually passing under the river at all. Trams emerged onto the Embankment and then crossed the river on Westminster Bridge. In 1931 the Subway was reconstructed for double-decker trams but was closed in April 1952 as part of the London Tram Replacement Scheme, completed in July of the same year. The middle part of the Subway is now the Strand road underpass (one way northbound) that climbs up through the site of Aldwych station into Kingsway itself while at the northern end at Southampton Row the ramp down to the Subway remains, complete with tram tracks, a silent memorial to London's long lost original vast tramway network.
Kilbirnie [2nd]: A unique survivor, this mile post is situated in the gardens of the Bridgend Community Centre in Kilbirnie. Whilst it would have been situated in the environs of Kilbirnie Station, I'm not sure whether it would be either Glasgow & South Western or LMS vintage. Painted over at the base of the milepost on the left side it declares 35 miles to Grangemouth, and on the right hand side at the base it says Iron Works 35 miles (possibly Lugar or Muirkirk), again painted over.
Balgreen Halt: Tamper working on the Edinburgh tram route near Balgreen Road, seen from a passing train on 9 July.
Kilmaurs: On 4th February 1898 the Ayr-Glasgow 'Boat Goods' and the Kilmarnock-Ayr 'Mail' collided at Barassie with 7 fatalities. A James Stirling 0-6-0, No. 49, on the Goods was completely destroyed and the Mail engine, No.153, a Hugh Smellie 4-4-0, was damaged beyond repair. This is the grave of the unfortunate John Tennant, one of the dead, in Kilmaurs Churchyard.
Wakefield Westgate: The atrium section of the new station building being erected at the north end of the up platform at Wakefield Westgate, complete with steps leading up to the recently installed DDA compliant footbridge running across to the down platform.
Wakefield Westgate: Former ScotRail 322481 boards at Wakefield Westgate on 9 July before departure at 16.33 on the all stations service to Doncaster. The Class 322 fleet has never had Northern Rail livery applied, possibly due to a short lease term.
Wakefield Westgate: The footbridge from the new station building at the north end of the up platform at Wakefield Westgate on 9 July 2013, complete with down side lift tower but still to have steps put in place.
Brock: The evening DRS train from Sellafield to Crewe, and the morning run in the opposite direction, are often used to transfer locomotives as well as flasks. Backlit by the July evening sun, two DRS Class 37s head south between Garstang and Brock hauling a Class 20 and a single flask wagon.
Wakefield Westgate: The south side of the atrium section of the new station building being erected at the north end of the up platform at Wakefield Westgate, with work taking place to complete the lift shaft to the recently installed footbridge to the down platform.
Marktredwitz: A trainload of timber (almost certainly from the Czech Republic) heading south towards Nuremberg, passes a stationary DB mixed freight at Marktredwitz in eastern Bavaria on 9th July 2013. This is one of the largest swathes of Germany with no electrified routes.

Cruden Bay: The magnificent Links at Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire, a course developed by the GNoSR and subsequently operated by the LNER until 1939. The station and Hotel are long gone, but a reminder of the course's railway parentage adorns this tee-side seat! See image [[40796]]

Harlech: The limit of the service of the Cambrian Coast line at Harlech station in July 2014, where the rails turn rusty and the weeds begin. Gwynedd Council has announced that the line, currently closed from Harlech to Pwllheli because of problems with the rebuilding of the Pont Briwet, should reopen by 1st September.
Harlech: Currently the only way of getting from Harlech to Pwllheli by rail. Scene near Harlech station on 9 July 2014. The Cambrian Coast Line is currently closed from Harlech to Pwllheli because of problems with the rebuilding of the Pont Briwet but is expected to reopen by 1st September.

This will provide direct pedestrian access from Lady Brae and the new housing developments to the south of the station.
Livingston North: New posters at Livingston North from station adopter the Museum of the Scottish Shale Oil Industry at Almond Valley Heritage evoke the transition from pits to trenches as the industry went to war. They recall workers who gave their lives for their country in the Great War, while others kept production going of the motor spirit, diesel oil and candles vital for the war effort. The shale-oil industry also produced heavy oil that fuelled much of the British Navy, while ammonium sulphate yielded as a by-product from shale was used in the production of explosives.
Fushiebridge [2nd]: ScotRail 158733 running south through the site of Fushiebridge station on 9 July 2015 on a driver training turn. The new footbridge in the background has recently been completed.
Gorebridge: Crew training stop at Gorebridge on 9 July 2015. The train is the 0959 Tweedbank - Newcraighall, formed by ScotRail DMU 158741.
Gorebridge: View south from Lady Brae Road as 158741 approaches Gorebridge on 9 July 2015 during a Tweedbank - Newcraighall crew training run. See image [[45126]].
Den Haag Centraal: Den Haag Centraal is probably my favourite station. It is usually frantically busy yet at the same time oddly relaxing. I like to grab a cheap and reliably high quality take away coffee from one of the many shops in the station and enjoy the music from the public piano which is in almost constant use by (generally surprisingly talented) passers by. On this particular July afternoon, the pianist was playing 'Primavera' by Einaudi (I know this because I asked) and it was actually quite magical.
Ile Rouse, Corsica: The line between Ile Rousse and Calvi on the island of Corsica operates a local shuttle with one of the older types of rolling stock. This is the view west from Ile Rousse on 9 July.
Kirkcaldy: 60026 leads empty cement tanks from Aberdeen to Oxwellmains into Kirkcaldy on 9 July.

Hayes Knoll: 'Woodbine' a Fowler built 0-4-0DM, passed to run on the GWR in 1941. Named Woodbine after the cigarettes produced in Swindon at the Wills factory.
Edinburgh Waverley: The dead end siding alongside the south wall at Waverley on 9 July 2016. A gleaming Freightliner 90042 is stabled between sleeper duties.
Stretton and Clay Mills: Looking south west towards Burton-on-Trent town centre in July 2016. The hump in the road shows where the level crossing was located, with the former station master's house on the left. Although some sources state that the wooden station building was demolished in 1964, I remember a wooden structure adjacent to this crossing in the winter 1983. The Nemesis Rail site is behind the white buildings in the background.
Burton-upon-Trent: Peeking through the gates at Nemesis Rail out of hours on 9 July 2016, 47848 can be seen taking a rest, surrounded by all sorts of other things which could be useful one day.
Moy: In heavy rain,Intercity liveried 37254 leads the test train for Inverness over the moor at Moy with Colas Railfreight liveried 37175 bringing up the rear.

Euxton: GBRF 66744 'Crossrail' hauls the 1Z75 Royal Scotsman on the first day of the 'Grand Tour of Great Britain' towards Chester on 09 July 2017. 66746 which had led from Dundee to Edinburgh see image [[59935]] where 66744 was evidently added as a substitute for non-starter 66743.
Millerhill EGIP Depot: Construction of stabling roads and erection of catenary associated with the new Millerhill electric train depot well advanced on 9 July 2017. View south east over the freight-only lines, with the Borders Railway behind the camera.
Manningtree: Not the best of places to break down and have to climb out of the cab…… On 9th July 2017, this late and ailing London to Norwich service finally expired at around 13.00 while crossing the River Stour at Manningtree. Eventually, the train was reversed into Manningtree station where the passengers had to disembark and await a following service.
Lady Victoria Pit Signal Box: A 4-car DMU on a Tweedbank – Edinburgh service about to pass below the bridge carrying the B704 road as it approaches the Newtongrange stop on 9 July 2017. The photograph was taken from the roadside 100m west of the bridge. The wood in the background stands on the site of the loading area and sidings that once served Lady Victoria Pit. See image [[6116]] [Ref query 1096]

East Wemyss Level Crossing: Mocked-up mine tubs painted to recall the Wemyss Private Railway, located where the Wemyss & Buckhaven (Thornton Junction - Methil) line passed under the A955. Beyond are a couple of salvaged mine cars. 9th July 2017.
Newtongrange: ScotRail 158740 seen shortly after leaving Newtongrange on 9 July 2017 with the 1011 Edinburgh - Tweedbank. The photograph is taken from the area on the west side of the line, opposite the National Mining Museum, that now forms Butlerfield Industrial Estate. During World War 2 this was the site of a large coal stocking area and disposal point, originally set up by the Ministry of Power in 1942 and eventually abandoned in the 1960s.
Eskbank: A ScotRail 5-car 170+158 combination approaching Eskbank on a murky 9 July 2017 with a northbound Borders Railway service.
Forth Bridge: Aerial view of the three Forth bridges, taken from a departing Edinburgh to Cardiff plane on the 9th July 2018. It is unusual to get such a clear view.
Forth Bridge: Aerial view of the three Forth bridges and a departing cruise liner on 9th July 2018.
Forth Bridge: An elevated and very clear view of the three Forth crossings taken after departure from Edinburgh Airport on 9th July 2018.

Montrose: Colas 70813 hauls the 6S48 Workington Docks to Craiginches freight over the bridge at Montrose on 9th July 2020. The bridge looks as if it is sinking, if the 6th pier in is anything to go by.
Usan Signal Box: 66425 passing the site of Usan signal box (closed in 2010) with 4A13, Grangemouth to Craiginches, on 9th July 2020.
Woodacre Crossing: Taken during that short summer window when it is just possible to photograph trains that usually run in darkness. Two former Greater Anglia Class 90s passed Woodacre at 9.35pm on 9th July 2021 with the 1633hrs Coatbridge FLT to Daventry intermodal. 90010, newly repainted in Freightliner orange, was leading 90011, which still carries 'East Anglian Daily Times' nameplates.
Leith North Goods: This unglamorous building is a surprising survivor of late C20 redevelopment. A little digging shows that it was probably part of the CR's dockside goods station and fronted the street which was once at an angle here. The main goods station building was where the flats now are, with the shed-like passenger station just south of that.
Leith Walk [CR]: The set back walls on this viaduct show where the station buildings of Leith Walk (CR) station would have been, had the station ever opened to passengers. In 2021 businesses seem to thrive (or at least survive) in every arch. There's also evidence of the very disruptive tram extension work on Leith Walk, off to the right. Locals are delighted by this.
Bay Horse: I'm thinking that the risk assessment for operating the excavator, high above the reprofiled WCML cutting at Forton near Bay Horse, is more than a single sheet of A4. 390153, heading south, gets underway again having been halted at the signal at the far end of the cutting for some reason on 9th July 2021.
Romford: Romford was opened by the Eastern Counties Railway on 20th June 1839. On 7th June 1893, the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway opened its short branch from Upminster to a single platform terminus facing the Great Eastern Railway lines (as the ECR had become in 1862), on the opposite side of the bridge over the High Street. This had its own entrance facing the GER station at street level but closed in 1934 and, ever since, passengers have used the main entrance, seen here, and cross to the Upminster branch by a footbridge across the street from the east end of the main line up platform. For a major station serving a major town, Romford deserves a better entrance than this rather unspectacular one, beneath the bridge carrying the quadrupled ex-GER lines. This view is on 9th July 2021.
Dalgety Bay: GBRf 66746 nears Dalgety Bay, with the Edinburgh to Boat of Garten leg of the Royal Scotsman 'Highland' tour, on 9 July 2022.

Didcot Railway Centre: 08604 (ex D3771) 'Phantom' with GWR numberplate 604, in the yard at Didcot Railway Centre in July 2022. This 08 worked out of Longsight, Manchester in the 1970s and certainly didn't sport cast plates in those days.
Didcot Railway Centre: Hunslet 0-6-0DM DL26 on Display in the Didcot yard, with a CWS small tank wagon, in July 2022. Fitted with a 264hp National engine the 1955 built loco worked for the National Coal Board at a variety of pits before purchase by the GWS in 1978 for use at Didcot. After many years service, the arrival of 08604 means it is now the reserve engine.
Didcot Railway Centre: Concern has been expressed on enthusiast forums about Brown Boveri Gas Turbine 18000. It is kept outside at Didcot and is starting to look slightly the worse for wear, as seen here on 9th July 2022.
Didcot Railway Centre: D9516 having a lunch break, between running trips on the Didcot demonstration line to Oxford Road station, on 9th July 2022.

Didcot Railway Centre: GWR 2-8-0T 5227, looking tidy but missing major items, in the yard at Didcot in July 2022. The boiler from this loco has been donated to the Churchward County Trust for their 'new build' 4-4-0 3840 'County of Montgomery'.
Didcot Railway Centre: Broad Gauge replica 4-2-2 'Iron Duke' by the reconstructed transfer shed on the demonstration line at Didcot. 9th July 2022
Bounds Green: Exterior of Bounds Green, Piccadilly Line, on the scorching morning of Saturday, 9th July 2022, two months short of the station's 90th birthday, seen from the upstairs side windows of a number 221 bus to Edgware. This station opened with the first stage of the Cockfosters extension from Finsbury Park to Arnos Grove on 19th September 1932. Like the other stations on the extension, which reached Cockfosters the following year, Bounds Green was designed by Dr. Charles Holden (1875-1960), the London Underground's Chief Architect between the two world wars. On the right, waiting at the traffic lights, is a single decker WVS bus on TfL route 299 from Cockfosters to Muswell Hill.
