Bressingham: Britannia Pacific No 70013 Oliver Cromwell simmers in the leafy setting of Bressingham Steam Museum and Gardens in August 1978. After becoming a purely static exhibit a few years later, it was eventually restored to working order by the Great Central Railway and started hauling trains on the network again in 2008.
Mellis: The former station at Mellis recorded on 20th August 1978 as 47115 dashes through with a Norwich to London service. Note the signalmans wing mirror, enabling a better view of the level crossing and its signals. [Ref Query 15487]
Diss: A Sunday morning visit to Diss on 20th August 1978 is rewarded with 40195 thundering through towards Norwich. It is hauling ecs from an Ipswich to Edinburgh Merrymaker excursion after its return to the Suffolk town. Steam was displaced from the London - Norwich expresses by Class 40s from 1958 and, in their turn, the Class 40s were replaced by Class 37s and 47s in the mid 1960s. By the time this photo was taken, such workings through Diss by Class 40s were very rare, even though the locos (including 40195) could still be seen on freight and boat trains between Harwich and the Midlands.

Bealings: During the last summer of Saturdays Only London – Lowestoft trains for holidaymakers, a Class 47 hauled down working streaks across the level crossing at Bealings on the East Suffolk line. The photo was taken from the signal box window ledge on 20th August 1983. The crossing keeper was wary of some train drivers speeding on this stretch of line, having once watched his gates being “gone through†after his signals were overrun. The box was abolished the following Spring and the gates replaced by lifting barriers. [Ref query 6339]

Trafford Park: Trafford Park is now an unstaffed station with a basic two hourly service. 142011 hurries through without stopping on 20 August on its way from Lime St to Oxford Rd, now only seven minutes away. The huge industrial estate, which still has an operational internal railway, lies just beyond the trees.

Gorebridge: The 1847 Gorebridge station building enjoys a clear view to the north once again, following the demolition and clearance of Harvieston Villas. The site will be used primarily as parking for around 100 cars. The trackbed now runs south unimpeded through the station site and below Lady Brae road bridge in the background. See image [[37704]]
Sheriffhall City Bypass Overbridge: A westbound van on the Edinburgh City Bypass approaching Sheriffhall roundabout on 20 August 2012. The gap in the trees is the point where the Borders Railway will run below the road shortly after leaving Shawfair station. Test bores and other advance works took place here during the summer. See image [[50963]]
Nuneaton North Chord: A lot has happened here since May 5th see image [[38775]]. The bridge deck for the North Chord over the WCML-Birmingham line spur is in place, and the embankment is complete. The working area in the foreground has been massively tidied - what price track, signals, and trains? About another £1 million, at a rough guess.
Humphrey Park: Humphrey Park is a fairly recent addition to the Manchester rail network having opened in 1984. It lies immediately west of (and in sight of) Trafford Park station on the line to Warrington Central. 150218, on a Lime St to Oxford Rd service, calls at this suburban halt which is unremarkable apart from the very pink fences that run the full length of both platforms. View west towards Urmston.
Coventry: The 07.06 class 153 service about to head back from Coventry to Nuneaton on a hazy summer morning in August 2012. This route will soon be upgraded with a new station at Bermuda Park see image [[31054]] and at the Ricoh Arena.

Tweedbank: Scene at Tweedbank following the formal announcement of the opening date for the Borders Railway by the First Minister - trains will run over the new line from 6 September 2015.
Lancaster: Fun and games at Lancaster. Black 5 45231 with the Fellsman stock stands on the Up Fast line at Lancaster having been wrongly routed there by Preston PSB instead of into Platform 4 where around a hundred passengers were waiting. Fortunately, the Class 37 on the rear was allowed to set back with the train so the service got away to Preston without too much delay.
Ayr Harbour: PS Waverley warps herself across from the North Harbour to collect her passengers for the last sail of the season from Ayr to Tarbert Loch Fyne.
Istanbul Sirkeci: Preserved steam locomotive outside the railway museum next to Istanbul's Sirkeci Station in August 2014.

Appleby: At about 13:35 on 20 August 2015 Jubilee No. 45699 accelerates away from the water stop at Appleby while working the northbound Dalesman. Galatea will shortly pass under the highly skewed masonry arch bridge at Brown Bank, which now carries no more than an unsurfaced farm track over the line. The track was at one time part of the Penrith to Brough Roman road and one presumes must have retained some importance into more recent times to justify such an expensive form of bridge construction.
Galashiels: Looking north along the A7 Ladhope Vale, Galashiels, on 20 August 2015, with the new Transport Interchange on the left. The building was officially opened on 6 August and is now operational as a bus station. The pedestrian crossing will eventually link the Interchange with the new railway station opposite.

Preston (Ribble Branch): Despite its diminutive size, Rolls Royce Sentinel Enterprise presents a powerful appearance as it draws seven loaded bitumen tankers from Strand Rd exchange sidings to the Lanfina depot on Preston Dock. The train is approaching the boarded foot crossing and the locomotive will shortly return light engine for the second rake of tanks.
Kirkcaldy: 46100 'Royal Scot' speeds through Kirkcaldy with the 'Forth Circle' on 20 August.

Bay Horse: On the west side of the WCML just south of the site of Bay Horse station is a building with large sliding doors on either end. It certainly looks like it was used by the railway as a goods shed but I don't have any definite proof, just the old maps which show there were sidings in that area.
Bay Horse: A Virgin Voyager on a London bound service approaches the site of Bay Horse station on the WCML between Preston and Lancaster. The station Opened in 1840 and closed in 1960 but 56 years later there is still evidence of it see image [[19844]], even when it is next to the WCML!

Borthwick Bank Signal Box: Black 5 No. 44871 making a determined climb of Borthwick Bank with the Forth Bridge and Borders Steam Special just after mid-day on Sunday 20th August. The location is about mid-way between the old Borthwick Bank box and Tynehead station, near Halflaw Kiln Farm.
Borthwick Bank Signal Box: The 11-coach SRPS Railtour from Linlithgow to Tweedbank battles up Borthwick Bank. Note the old platelayers' hut which has survived through being located in a private field, rather than within the new railway footprint where it would have been swept away indiscriminately during construction works. The field formerly housed extensive sidings for the dumping of ash from St Margaret's shed.
Borthwick Bank Signal Box: This location is about mid-way between the old Borthwick Bank box and Tynehead station, near Halflaw Kiln Farm. 37 685 banking 44871 - there is some smoke visible to the right hand side of the shot which betrays the presence of the Black 5 at the front of the train, otherwise one might conclude that the Type 3 is running wrong line downhill.
Borthwick Bank Signal Box: The SRPS Railtour from Linlithgow to Tweedbank battles up Borthwick Bank, with both locos working hard - 44871 at the front and 37 685 at the rear.
Borthwick Bank Signal Box: Formed of a 6-car Class 170, the 11.45 Tweedbank-Edinburgh service coasts down Borthwick Bank past the southbound SRPS Railtour.
Dysart: 37685 on the rear of the SRPS Borders Railway excursion, returning from Tweedbank on 20th August 2017. The train has just passed Dysart.
Edinburgh Waverley: DRS 57301 Goliath at Platform 9 in Waverley station with the returning Northern Belle to Manchester Victoria on 19th August 2017. DRS 57303 Pride of Carlisle was on the rear of the train.
Borthwick Bank Signal Box: 37 685 pushes from the rear of the SRPS Railtour on the approach to Tynehead. This was the first time the photographer had ever witnessed a Class 37 on the Waverley Route / Borders Railway, as most of his travel on the line was from 1961 to 1966, prior to the introduction of EE Types 3s. It was worth the 50-plus year wait for the sight and sound!
Donibristle Platform: 66430 and 66424 pass the site of Donibristle Halt with an Elgin - Millerhill ballast on 20 August 2017.
Borthwick Bank Signal Box: Author Sandy Mullay's description of a 'sinuous succession of curves' comes to mind in this long shot of the SRPS Railtour passing through the distinctive deep stone cutting at the south end of Borthwick Bank.
Birky Side Dump: Deep in the woods to the east of Borthwick Bank lurk a remarkable number of survivors of the former ash dump sidings - in this case a 1900 NBR chair.
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: View north east towards the Queen Street trainshed from West George Street on 20th August 2018. Piling work for the new building is in progress during the day.
Needlefield Carriage Sidings: Grab shot of Inverness Depot on 20th August 2018, with a HST alongside presumably on a training trip.
Newbigging Siding: With the opening of the Forth Bridge and its connecting railway from Burntisland, a transfer platform was provided for the Carron Company's Newbigging limestone mine and its tramway, which crossed a bridge over the footpath. The main line railway is to the right. 20 August.
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: The south aspect of the train shed on an evening in August 2018. The plywood partition is at the level of the concourse and platforms with the Dundas Street entrance passageway coming in from the left.
Finnart Viaduct: 44871 returns north to Fort William after a quick stint in Fife and the Borders over two weekends. The locomotive is seen here just north of Finnart Viaduct passing the Finnart Oil Terminal on Loch Long. Finding a gap in the trees anywhere between Whistlefield and Arrochar and Tarbet is a challenge.
Glenfinnan: The Jacobites gather at Glenfinnan on 20th August 2019. 45407 leaves Glenfinnan for Fort William while passengers from the afternoon trip to Mallaig, hauled by 45212, mill around on the station.
Polnish No 107 Tunnel: Black 5 45212 climbing the gradient out of Lochailort with the afternoon 'Jacobite' service for Mallaig on 20th August 2019. Pictured passing the former 'Our Lady of the Braes' Roman Catholic Church, which ceased to be used in 1964. After appearing derelict for many years it has recently been painted. A good omen, perhaps? In the early 1980s scenes for the film 'Local Hero' were filmed here.
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: 43014 and 43062 top and tail the New Measurement Train seen here at Queen Street platform 7 during its journey from Heaton back to Newcastle via Edinburgh.

Port Talbot Steel Works: It looks like TATA have spent money on a new loco for Port Talbot. This powerful looking machine - is it an 0-6-0 or a 6W? - is seen in action on 20th August 2019.
Claughton: A slightly hazy view of the Claughton Aerial Ropeway, top to bottom, looking across from the Aughton side of the Lune Valley in August 2019. Claughton brick works can be seen at the bottom with the trackbed of the Wennington to Lancaster line running across the fields towards it. The lower wheelhouse is the slightly taller building near the centre of the photo. The cables can just been seen heading up hill across the fields from there and then take a line through the trees on their way to the clay pit wheelhouse, the grey building top left of the photo.
Tom-na-Faire Depot: Black 5 No.45407 experiences a signal check shortly after leaving Fort William for Mallaig with the morning 'Jacobite' on 20th August 2019. Nice to see semaphore signals still in use here.
Hornby: Station Court at Hornby, and a small industrial unit behind it, occupy the site of Hornby Station and the trackbed of the North Western line from Wennington to Lancaster.
