Iron and steel manufacturer, engineer and contractor. Owner of the Dalmarnock Iron Works established in 1872.

William Arrol and Company were fabricators and contractors for the Forth Bridge. Construction began in 1882 and the bridge was opened in 1890.

William Arrol was knighted in 1890.

His home, from 1890, was Seafield House in Ayr.
