That buffer stop must be the stub of some lovely old main line, and before long it will be gone completely. In 2011, however, it's the headshunt for the latest extension to an International Railfreight Terminal, and if we come back in a couple of years, there could be a lot more to see. So I just had to settle for a picture of 66305 heading North with containers. see image 43151 for a similar train, much further North 12/42

03/04/2013
Ken Strachan

Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal

Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (Network Rail)

At last! Ever since they extended DIRFT across the A5, I've been trying to photograph a main line engine in daylight see image 36944. This is 37194, apparently on the naughty step on 9th April. The sting in the tail is that it is currently not a main line engine, as it is employed as the North terminal shunter. 13/42

09/04/2013
Ken Strachan

Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal

Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (Network Rail)

After two and a half years see image 33772, I finally photograph a train passing under the A5. Some embankment infill and a large drainpipe are also in shot as the North abutment of the A428 rail-over-road bridge takes shape. The destination of this new line, DIRFT3, can be seen on the horizon. 16/42

25/06/2014
Ken Strachan

Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal

Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (Network Rail)

When a new railway is being built, a sign notifying a forthcoming road closure is usually a promising sign. Since my last visit on 25th June see image 47777, two long side girders have been lifted into place across the A428, and a number of lateral girders have been bolted into place between these two. This should look very impressive when trains eventually pass across it. 17/42

17/07/2014
Ken Strachan

Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal

Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (Network Rail)

To paraphrase the famous soft drink advert, made in Daventry - from girders. The retaining wall and fence on the right are finished; as is the embankment on the left, complete with acoustic fence to protect residents of the new housing estate to be built beyond. The warehouse in the background belongs to Sainsbury's, and faces a longer established Tesco warehouse. On the last Friday before the clocks went back, 66424 is leading the 18.39 departure from Daventry to Coatbridge FLT into the DIRFT yard on 23rd October 2015. This image was captured at 1734, giving the locomotive ample time to run around see image 52864. The train has just crossed the recently built bridge over the A428. 25/42

23/10/2015
Ken Strachan

Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal

Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (Network Rail)

Only eight months ago see image 50466, this Eddie Stobart warehouse was just a steel frame. Now it is in use, ready to exchange freight with the line of Cargowaggons on the siding. The 350 is heading for London via Northampton. 26/42

23/10/2015
Ken Strachan

Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal

Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (Network Rail)

Here's one I prepared earlier see image 53055. The DRS service for Sainsbury's is about 12 hours away from its scheduled arrival at Coatbridge FLT. The foreground is surprisingly pleasant as the environs of warehouses go; a small gap in the vegetation makes it hard to avoid getting a lamppost in front of the locomotive. This will need an overbridge across the A5 similar to that over the A428, and an extension of the existing embankment past DIRFT 3 see image 52516. 29/42

04/12/2015
Ken Strachan

Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal

Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (Network Rail)

It's a lonely life a-shunting. There are two sets of steps, one either side of the bridleway bridge over the throat of the new yard. They are presumably intended to allow horse riders to dismount and lead their nervous nags over the footbridge (hoofbridge?) before remounting on the other side. Notice that they are designed for reversible working. View looks NE towards M1. 42/42

10/03/2022
Ken Strachan
