The train is double headed by Black 5 no 44997 and A4 Pacific 60009 Union of South Africa. [Editor's notes: Roving Railscot reporter and raconteur John Robin was on this trip and recalls particularly the swing of the Black 5 as it was pushed through Stonehaven at 75 mph and out onto the viaduct. (He also remembers the whole tour cost just £5!)]
Another notable feature is the warm smile on the face of the unknown young girl in the centre of the picture... which seems to light up the whole scene... could almost be a descendent of The Fair Maid herself! 1/9

25/03/1967
Robin Barbour Collection (Courtesy Bruce McCartney)

Aberdeen

Denburn Valley Line (Great North of Scotland Railway)

Black 5 no 44997 with A4 no 60009 Union of South Africa coming off BR Grand Scottish Tour No 1 at Aberdeen on 25 March 1967, having hauled the train from Perth. 2/9

25/03/1967
Robin Barbour Collection (Courtesy Bruce McCartney)

Aberdeen

Denburn Valley Line (Great North of Scotland Railway)

Scene at Aberdeen station on 25 March 1967 as Black 5 no 44997 together with A4 no 60009 Union of South Africa come off BR Grand Scottish Tour No 1 after bringing the 18 coach special from Perth. 3/9

25/03/1967
K A Gray

Aberdeen

Denburn Valley Line (Great North of Scotland Railway)

On the Scottish Region's epic 18-coach Grand Scottish Tour No 1 in 1967, diesel haulage replaced steam during the stop at Aberdeen, despite Sulzer D5070 doing its best to disguise the fact. The two diesels (the other being D5127) took the tour onwards to Aviemore, via Craigellachie and the Speyside line. At Aviemore a third Sulzer was added for the run over the Highland main line to Perth. 4/9

25/03/1967
Brian Haslehust

Aberdeen

Denburn Valley Line (Great North of Scotland Railway)

A4 no 60009 Union of South Africa + Black 5 no 44997 attracting attention at Aberdeen on 25 March 1967.
