Achill Extension Railway

Introduction

This was a short light railway line which extended the Westport and Mullaranny Railway west from Mallaranny to Achill. It was the western end of the Mayo Branch of the Midland Great Western Railway.

Most of the scenic former trackbed is now part of the Great Western Greenway .

This was a two platform station with a passing loop. The main station building was on the westbound platform. At the east end of the eastbound platform was a watertank. Both the building and watertank base were brick built.

The terminus of the line from Mallaranny [2nd] on the east bank of the Achill Sound and alongside the Achill Bridge, connecting Achill Island to the mainland. The terminus had a loop, locomotive shed and turntable.
