Ardnacrusha Siding

Introduction

This long siding, nearly two miles long, was built for construction of the Ardnacrusha Hydro Power Station. It ran from west of the Shannon Viaduct northwards to Ardnacrusha Hydro Power Station. It briefly carried passengers, visiting the site of the construction.

In addition to the power station a considerable headrace (headwater) was built parallel and north of the course of the River Shannon, running north east from the power station for over 7 miles. The tailrace is over a mile long running from the power station to the River Shannon.

The siding ran out from the former Limerick and Ennis Railway, the junction facing Limerick.
