Introduction

Founded in 1909 by George Balfour and Andrew Beatty. The company still exists today. Its origins were in electric tramways and hydro electric schemes, at first in Britain and then internationally.

Construction of line by Balfour, Beatty & Co Ltd begins. The line facilitates construction of the Lochaber Aluminium Works and the considerable hydro scheme powering it with a pipeline running east to Loch Treig and Loch Laggan.

Completes construction of the Lochaber Aluminium Works and its hydroscheme and tunnels.

Sells Fife Tramway Light and Power Company (owner of the Dunfermline and District Tramways) to Scottish Motor Traction.

Builds the Churchill Barriers at Scapa Flow, Orkney, using the temporary Churchill Barrier Railways. (Completed 1944.)
