Cairngryffe Quarry Tramway

Introduction

This 2ft tramway served the Cairngryffe Quarry (also known as Cloburn). It ran west from Grange Siding on the Caledonian Railway main line, a little south of Carstairs, to the quarry. The tramway closed in 1960.

This line is divided into a number of portions.


Pettinain to Cairngryffe

This 1897 signal box was on the east side of the line south of Carstairs, Float Viaduct and the Strawfrank Watertroughs. It controlled access to Grange Siding from which the Cairngryffe Quarry Tramway ran south west to the quarry. The siding was on the west side of the line and approached from the north.

Also known as Cairngryfe Quarry or Cloburn Quarry. This was operated by Lanarkshire County Council's Road Department. A 2 ft tramway ran north west to Grange Siding (alongside Pettinain Signal Box). The Quarry had its own locomotives, one by Dempster, Moore & Co.
