This colliery was sunk by the Eglinton Iron Co just west of the Muirkirk Iron Works in 1870. Ownership swapped to Bairds and Dalmellington Limited in 1930. It was rebuilt in the 1950s and closed in 1968. The spelling 'Kames' was also used latterly.
