This colliery was sunk by the Eglinton Iron Co just west of the Muirkirk Iron Works in 1870. Ownership swapped to Bairds and Dalmellington Limited in 1930. It was rebuilt in the 1950s and closed in 1968. The spelling 'Kames' was also used latterly.
The colliery was to the west of Muirkirk [1st] station and the iron works to the east. The station was relocated to the east as Muirkirk [2nd] which allowed lines to be laid through the former station allowing coal trains to pass from the mine to the works without fouling the main line.
Some traces remain at the colliery site today. The colliery site and former iron works site were both cleared.
