This signal box was west of Muirkirk [1st] and controlled access to the short branch to Wellwood No 1 Pit, a coal pit.
The mineral branch ran east then south to the coal mine. The box, opened when the line doubled in 1878, was on the south side of the junction. There were exchange sidings on the branch close to the junction.
The box closed in 1927 when the mine closed.
The railway closed west of Muirkirk [2nd] in 1951 but remained open to freight until 1969.
The trackbed remains intact and can be walked. The former junction can be clearly seen.
