This shed was located to the south of Muirkirk [1st] station and goods yard. The original Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway locomotive shed was single ended. It was originally a two road building.
This shed was replaced by the Glasgow and South Western Raiwlay around 1879 with a four road Andrew Galloway shed with his characteristic tall windows in the gable end. This coincided with the opening of the Muirkirk Branch (Caledonian Railway) in 1879 (the Caledonian Railway was allowed access to the shed for its engines). Approach was from the west. The turntable and coaling area were to the south of the shed.
In the mid 1950s the shed was reduced back to two roads by demolition of the northern portion.
In 1950 passenger trains from the west, over the former Glasgow and South Western Railway route, were withdrawn. The shed survived this closure. However when the line from the east, the former Caledonian Railway route, closed in 1964 the shed also closed. The railway closed altogether in 1968 with the closure of Kaimes Colliery.
