Caledonian Sleeper National Express takes over the franchise for ScotRail and the Caledonian Sleepers. Awarded for seven years. This was the last of the franchises to be let and had the largest number of route miles, trains and stations served. |
| 30/03/1998 | ScotRail £125M orders placed to lease 40 Class 334 'Juniper' trains (to be built by GEC Alsthom, former Metro-Cammell Birmingham) from Forward Trust Rail and 9 Class 170s (Adtranz, Derby) from Porterbrook placed. |
| 03/08/1999 | ScotRail First Class 334, 334001, delivered from Washwood Heath to Shields Road Depot. |

| 26/07/2019 | St Rollox Works Works closed by Gemini Rail Services and 'mothballed'. Maintenance of the ScotRail fleet now requires haulage to England for heavy maintenance. |
| /10/2019 | ScotRail Work begins to convert Class 153s, leased from Angel Trains, for carrying bicycles on the West Highland Railway (for Oban services). The work was undertaken by Brodie Engineering, Kilmarnock. The Class 153s are coupled with Class 156s. |
