The works and mines on the private railway.

This works is closed. The furnace bank of this early coke iron works still stands, the iron works itself closing with the creation of the National Coal Board. A water tower above the furnace bank also survives. Other parts of the works, such as brass casting, survived for longer, around 1971.

This mine was sunk by the Shotts Iron Co in the 1870s, originally for iron ore for the Shotts Iron Works and later coal. It was the site of a disaster, a serious pit fire, which resulted in the deaths of 63 miners. This pit disaster is considered the worst in Lothian mining history.
