Waterford and Wexford Railway

Introduction

Despite the name, this former railway company's line runs from Wexford to Rosslare Europort. The line remains open. The name was due to the original intentions of the company.

Incorporated for a line from Wexford to Ballyhack with a branch to Greenore. Greenore Point, extreme south east of Ireland, was renamed Rosslare Harbour and selected to become a port for a short sea crossing to Wales. Rosslare Pier would be built.

Construction begins.

Opened from Wexford, connecting with the Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford Railway, to Rosslare Harbour [1st] and Rosslare Pier (the pier itself being owned by the harbour commissioners and a proper station only developed in 1906).

Takes control of quarry. Later connects quarry and Drinnagh Cement Works to the Waterford and Wexford Railway by a narrow gauge line.

Contract for the 'South Wexford Line' to Robert McAlpine to build the line from Rosslare to Abbey Junction [Waterford], with a curve from Killinick to Felthouse Junction (Waterford and Wexford Railway) and the connection from Suirbridge Junction to Grace Dieu Junction west of Waterford. Large bridges required: Suir Viaduct (1,210ft) and Barrow Viaduct (2,131ft, Ireland's longest bridge). Rosslare Pier to be extended by Charles Brand of Glasgow.
