This line extended the London and South Western Railway from Clapham Junction to Waterloo. In the process it replaced the terminus at Nine Elms. The line is largely on a viaduct.
It was built in response to the Richmond Railway, who had proposed it. The London and South Western Railway encouraged them to drop it and they would built it instead.
The engineer was Joseph Locke.
