The Wilsontown Iron Works opened in 1779. Tramways linked outlying mines to the works, opened by 1805. The works largely closed in 1812/13 and the tramway closed. The works fully closed in 1842 and the area was given over to coal mining. A railway - Wilsontown Branch (Caledonian Railway) - opened to serve the coal mines in 1876.
