By the beginning of the 20th century Scarborough was having difficulty coping with the volume of excursion trains. With no room to expand at the main station, the NER built a second just to the south. Scarborough Excursion station opened in 1908, consisting of a 250 yard bay and a 300 yard through platform, with most excursion traffic using the latter, thence running through Falsgrave tunnel to the carriage sidings at Northstead. The station was renamed Scarborough, Londesborough Road, in 1933. This view south from opposite Falsgrave box on 28 September 2008 shows the long through platform at Londesborough Road with surviving buildings to the right. The station handled its last train in 1963.
