A Sunday morning visit to Diss on 20th August 1978 is rewarded with 40195 thundering through towards Norwich. It is hauling ecs from an Ipswich to Edinburgh Merrymaker excursion after its return to the Suffolk town. Steam was displaced from the London - Norwich expresses by Class 40s from 1958 and, in their turn, the Class 40s were replaced by Class 37s and 47s in the mid 1960s. By the time this photo was taken, such workings through Diss by Class 40s were very rare, even though the locos (including 40195) could still be seen on freight and boat trains between Harwich and the Midlands.
