Wivenhoe

In the 1980s, August Bank Holidays still saw very large influxes of day trippers from London into the coastal resorts of Clacton and Walton. British Rail anticipated that the inhabitants of these resorts would like nothing more than to escape the invasion by heading off on a mystery excursion. Having departed Clacton at 6.00 a.m on August Bank Holiday 1980, the MystEx (hauled by 47114) calls for additional custom at Wivenhoe around half an hour later. The train's destination was Scarborough. Whether or not it was passed en route by a similar MystEx from Scarborough to Clacton is another mystery...
