In order to cope with increased volumes of traffic on 4 April 2009, Grand National day, the Northern trains Preston to Ormskirk shuttle operated using a 153+150 combination. The photograph shows 153331 on the Preston end of the 1710 hrs Preston to Ormskirk service with 150224 leading as the service passes Ulnes Walton between Midge Hall and Croston. The area on the other side of the tracks was a WW2 ammuntion storage site with protected storage bunkers (some still exist) which were interconnected by railway sidings linking onto the Preston - Ormskirk line. Some of the site is now occupied by HMP Garth and HMP Wymott.
