Carlisle

One of the 1200hp Co-Bo diesel locomotives, D5701, built by Metropolitan Vickers in 1958 as part of the BR modernisation plan, stands at Carlisle with a southbound train in the 1960s. Notoriously unreliable machines, of the 20 examples in the class, 19 had disappeared by December 1969 (8 to McWilliams, Shettleston and 11 to Cashmores, Great Bridge) with the remaining example now preserved on the East Lancs Railway see image 18211.
