Buchanan Street: The crew of Black 5 44903, photographed at Glasgow Buchanan St on 30th July 1965. Fifty-five years later, if anyone recognises them, please tell me! I didn’t keep a note of their names – all the more inexcusable as they kindly allowed me a footplate ride through the Buchanan St tunnel with the empty stock they were about to take to Sighthill sidings.

Glasgow Queen Street High Level: The advertising fraternity knew their Glasgow target audience only too well, to judge from the posters seen from the buffer stops at Glasgow Queen St High Level in 1965. Cigarettes and alcohol took up rather more space than milk, though I have to say that the 'Drinka Pinta' slogan was quite catching in its day. The train just arrived was a Friday/Saturday only summer service from York, brought in by V2 2-6-2 60813. The stovepipe chimney and associated smoke deflection system on this locomotive were unique and, at least to my mind, rather disfiguring.

Clifton Bridge: The trackbed and tunnel under Brunel's suspension bridge on Bristol's Portbury branch. You will note the vegetation getting a grip. I spoke to a passing PW ganger  who informed me that, as the line runs through a SSSI zone, they are not allowed to use weedkiller. So long as the growing grass/weeds do not affect the passage of freight trains it will not be touched.

Largo Viaduct: The Fife coastal village of Largo was served by the railway that ran from Thornton Junction to St Andrews. The line was a victim of the Beeching cuts, closing in stages between 1965 and 1969. The surviving four arch viaduct, seen here looking west in July 2013, is still a landmark in the village. The proposed development involves reinstating the Borders Railway .... and realigning the A7 to the east of Falahill cottages. The realigned road will cross the railway using a simple bridge structure. (Update - an alternate planning proposal is now under consideration which would see the A7 staying close to its present course - with a bridge structure way beyond simple - August 2013). Blythburgh: 90 years after the narrow gauge Southwold Railway closed, the sole surviving building is the old goods shed at the Blythburgh station site but it is in a very run down condition. Seen here alongside the trackbed path in July 2019, the wooden building appears to be held up by the surrounding trees. It reminded me of the old station at Moniaive see image [[30761]] although it is not in such good condition!

Saxmundham: The rather stark appearance of present day Saxmundham station has been brought about by the recent demolition of the main station building following a fire. This view from the new Lowestoft platform looks towards Ipswich in July 2019. It shows the East Suffolk line control centre, the two level crossings and the start of the single line section to Woodbridge. The original Lowestoft platform was staggered and on the far side of the level crossing.

Strathbungo: Local residents in the Southside of Glasgow have voted overwhelmingly for a new railway footbridge connecting Darnley Road and Moray Place in Strathbungo. Network Rail asked members of the community to help select a new footbridge design to replace the current crossing because the existing bridge will not be suitable when the line is electrified. Three artist impressions of different options were shared with approximately 5,000 residents and business owners to gain an overall design preference for the new bridge from local people. In the vote, 85% of respondents opted for bridge A - a bespoke curved design that was inspired by the current bridge, with a high metal rail on top and a toughened glass parapet to achieve a solid but open look.

2002^Monsoon^ disrupts services30 July saw monsoon conditions, with over a month^s rainfall in a day over much of Scotland. All three routes between Glasgow and Edinburgh were closed until after end of service by flooding or landslips. Through most of 31 July Edinburgh and Glasgow services were diverted to Springburn, which remained the terminus for local services from Stirling and Cumbernauld for over a week while the Maryhill route was suspended. Glasgow Queen Street^s trackbed was flooded to 15 inches and track circuits damaged.

On Sunday 4 August Edinburgh and Aberdeen services were diverted to Central, taking Turbostars there for the first time so that engineers could repair the track circuits in the Queen Street Tunnel.

Monday 5 August saw the reopening of the Highland Main Line at Slochd after repairs to a damaged embankment near Slochd viaduct. Barrhead locals went half-hourly for the first time since introduction of the special timetable on 7 January. However the reintroduction of the 15-minute interval service between Edinburgh and Glasgow (which had been announced for 5 August before the flood damage) had to be deferred, and the Argyle Line remained closed due to damage to track circuits associated with flooding at Dalmarnock where the track was submerged between the platforms.

2012Bookshop success at Pitlochry station [Railscot]Donations to charities from the Pitlochry Station bookshop have now exceeded £75,000. The shop - opened in 2005 under ScotRail’s Adopt a Station scheme – sells second hand books, with the proceeds going to six charities. They include the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) - which is also ScotRail’s charity partner. And this month, the bookshop made its first payment to a sixth charity – Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance. Ken Nichol, chairman of the Pitlochry Station Bookshop, said: “We simply opened the shop to give customers the chance to buy a book for their train journey and hand it back on return to re-sell. “We are now open six days a week, and are so grateful to ScotRail for its continuing support – without which we would not have raised so much money, which benefits a number of charities.” John Yellowlees, ScotRail’s external relations manager, said: ^Pitlochry is the doyen of our adopted stations. We are delighted at the bookshop^s continuing success, and note next year marks the 150th anniversary of the completion of the original Highland Main Line from Perth to Inverness.^ The accommodation that houses the bookshop was recently improved with new secondary glazing, with assistance from the Railway Heritage Trust, and funding for painting was given by Perth & Kinross Council.
2013Groundbreaking factory train slashes years off electrification programme [Network Rail]A factory on rails, the first of its kind to be used on Britain’s railways, will slash years off the time it will take to electrify the Great Western main line. With 235 route miles to electrify from Maidenhead in the East* to Swansea in the West and many thousands of trains to keep running while the work is done, we^re working with German manufacturer Windhoff to build the High Output Plant system (HOPS) train to do the job. The 23-vehicle train, in effect several trains in one, will work its way west, building the railway electrical infrastructure as it goes.
2013Switzerland Crash: Driver^s Body Recovered [Sky News]A driver^s body has been recovered following a train crash in Switzerland that left at least 35 passengers injured. 2014London orbital railway on mayor^s £1.3tn wishlist [Guardian]Blueprints for a new orbital metro-style railway around London are being drawn up by the city^s transport authorities as part of a massive proposed infrastructure investment to keep the capital moving as the population soars in coming decades. Around £200bn of spending on transport infrastructure alone will be needed in the capital by 2050 to keep it in the top tier of world cities, according to the London mayor, Boris Johnson. Predicting that London^s geography would shift to the east as the population passes 11 million, Johnson said unfashionable Barking would be the Piccadilly Circus of a century^s time. [From John Thorn]
2015Milestone for Portishead-Bristol line restoration [Rail News]Network Rail has appointed Arup to help reinstate the rail link between Portishead and Bristol city centre. The first phase of the MetroWest project involves restoring the disused Portishead branch line, building a new station at Portishead and reopening the station at Pill. Arup will provide the outline design for the project, which will also include enhancement works at Bathampton and Avonmouth, covering track, drainage, civils, structures, telecoms, signalling power, points heating, OLE, M&E and geotechnical engineering, and environmental consulting. The project remains subject to the Development Consent Order (DCO) process – a form of planning permission for major infrastructure projects. Network Rail has said the line is expected to be reinstated by 2019. Opened in 1867, the line was the victim of Beeching’s axe, closing to passengers in September 1964. [From Richard Buckby]
2015Winchburgh’s 44-day blockade [Rail Engineer]A legacy of the rapid early growth of Britain’s railway network is that the UK has one of the world’s most restrictive loading gauges. As a result, typically half of the cost of British electrification projects is the civil engineering work to adapt structures to provide clearance for wires and pantographs. [From Richard Buckby]
2015Go-ahead for new hybrid trains to far south west [Rail News]THE Government has given its approval for a new fleet of hybrid trains which are being bought by First Great Western in an unusual privately-funded deal worth £360 million. The fleet of 29 Hitachi AT300 units will be used on routes to the far south west, beyond the presently-planned limits of Great Western electrification, and will replace the current fleet of HSTs, which are now in their fourth decade and were unlikely to be worth upgrading for service beyond 2020, according to operator First Great Western. [From Richard Buckby]
2016Converted Underground train could be running soon [Rail News]AN unusual project to convert retired London Underground District line cars into diesel-powered units may be about to pay off, after London Midland announced that a ^D-Train^ could enter service on its local route between Coventry and Nuneaton this year. The line has been in the news after attempts to cater for sports crowds at the Ricoh Stadium in Coventry with hired rolling stock failed to pay their way, with fans being advised to use road transport instead because the usual single-car unit on the line would not be able to cope. London Midland had also said that there were no guarantees that more rolling stock would necessarily be available on match days unless it was specially hired, and so it was reluctant to advertise extra services. The three-car ^D-Train^ may help to solve the problem, and also provide more capacity for regular passengers. It has been developed by Warwickshire-based Vivarail, which has bought redundant D78 stock from London Underground.
2017Pair on quest to visit all British railway stations [BBC News]Two railway enthusiasts are travelling to every station in Britain in a bid to inspire people to explore more of the country by train. BBC Look North caught up with the pair as they travelled through Yorkshire.
2018Northern: Most cancelled services to resume after timetable disruption [BBC News]Northern rail is reinstating 75% of the services it cancelled after a new timetable led to severe disruption.
