The south end of Newline tunnel on the steep climb to Britannia summit. Closed to regular traffic in 1947 the tunnel was used as a vehicle workshop, accessed from the north side although there appears to be a fire escape door in this bricked up south portal. The workshop has since closed but the tunnel is now used by the Highways Dept. to store road salt. Viewed from the A6066 Stacksteads to Bacup road at SD 877216 the buildings on the horizon overlook the north portal showing how shallow the land over the tunnel roof is. See image 35969
