Laigh Hill Tunnel

During the 1980s, there were two named daytime through trains between Inverness and London, the Highland Chieftan (Kings Cross) and the Clansman (Euston). The up Clansman is shown here passing through the Laighills in Dunblane behind 47 630 in September 1986. It is identifiable by the red carriage stripe (then blue for ScotRail stock). Whereas the Chieftan called at Edinburgh and needed no change of loco north of the border, the Clansman had to bypass Glasgow and change haulage for the WCML. From 1987, the Clansman was diverted via Edinburgh, with the result that it took over 90 minutes longer to reach London than its rival. It was eventually withdrawn as a through service in 1992.
