Laigh Hill Tunnel

In 2011, the survival of the remaining through Inverness-London services was called into question. An earlier casualty had been the Inverness-Euston Clansman which withered away in the early 1990s. This photo, taken just north of Dunblane in April 1987, shows the up Clansman in its finest and fastest form, composed of new executive liveried Mk3 coaching stock and routed via Coatbridge. Unfortunately, its competition with the Highland Chieftain had already been conceded and a few weeks later the Clansman was diverted to run via Edinburgh, substantially increasing journey time, and downgraded to older coaching stock. From then on, its days were numbered.
