Whittingham Hospital

The railway serving the County Mental Hospital, Whittingham, Lancashire, connected with the Preston to Longridge branch at Grimsargh. It only had four locomotives throughout its 68 year life. This is No. 2, an 0-4-2T built by Andrew Barclay's (AB 1026/1904), which supplemented an earlier Barclay 0-4-0ST (No. 1) and was itself retired around 1952. The CMHW Railway closed in 1957 and the hospital itself in 1995 although some workshop activities continue on site at present, some of these being in the old railway buildings. This view is taken on the engine shed siding at Whittingham and No. 2 appears to be buffered up against the ex-LBSCR 0-4-2T that worked here from 1946 to 1955. See image 33240
