Beeching's hidden policy? Many 1960s railwaymen said their lines were deliberately run down to prove the case for closure and Leek to Uttoxeter must have been one of them. By 1964 Leek was a branch terminus rather than a junction and the 1964 timetable extract shows the meagre service AND also the ludicrous situation where both the morning and evening trains crossed at Kingsley but ran ECS in the other direction. The operating costs in relation to passenger usage would have been very high and sure enough the line closed soon after although part of it is now preserved.
