The former station at Rayne on the Bishop's Stortford to Braintree line had reached a low point by 1980, as shown here. Neglected and ransacked, its windows smashed, the empty premises did not appear to have much of a future. The pleasant surprise awaiting the visitor today is the building's reincarnation as a rest point and tea room for cyclists traveling along the Flitch Way. The boys in the scene have a metal detector and are unlikely to have unearthed much more than a rail chair screw.
